How do I reactivate Duo when I get a new phone or activate Duo if I've only been using SMS texts?

These instructions will also work if you need to activate the Duo mobile app because you've been using SMS passcodes to authenticate

NOTE: Library & IT offers many ways to authenticate, whether you need to reactivate duo or just gain one-time access to a Bucknell internal page or system. For more information check out or Duo Security FAQ article

NOTE: Library & IT will not provide a QR activation code for you to reactivate Duo Security.

Before you start

Before you start, a few things will be required to follow the steps.

  1. Current students, faculty, and staff should update B-Alert if your phone number changes.
  2. You will need to choose one of the authentication options below to start the process - text, Duo SOS, or code generator. You can authenticate even when you believe you cannot do so.*
  3. You must have your username, password, BUID (if applicable), and necessary hardware immediately available to you.
  4. Log into a service that requires Duo like myBucknell or Bmail. Enter your Bucknell Credentials. 
    • Stop at the duo screen and continue What form of authentication do you plan to use?
  5. The current version of Duo Mobile supports:
    • Android 11.0 and greater and Android Go 11.0 and greater
    • iOS 15.0 and greater

What form of authentication (used to verify identity) do you plan to use?

Click on the situation below that applies to how you will authenticate during the setup process. This step is required and most people can complete these steps without IT intervention. We have many ways to authenticate whether you need to reactivate duo or just gain one-time access to a Bucknell internal page or system. For more information check out this Duo Security FAQ article.

Reactivating Duo Mobile - SMS Passcode Method

Reactivating with the same phone number by receiving a text message

  1. On your new smartphone, download and install the Duo Mobile app from your device app store. If you already have Duo Mobile installed, you can skip the installation step.
  2. Open a browser and go to a page like my.bucknell.edu or mail.bucknell.edu. You'll be prompted for your username and password. 
  3. When Duo tries to authenticate, select Other Options

  4. Select Manage Devices

  5. You will need to verify yourself. Select Text message passcode.

  6. Enter the code texted to your smartphone in the passcode field box. If you do not get the passcode, select send a new passcode and enter the code sent via text. 

  7. Once verified, you will see a list of devices on your Duo account. Select I have a new phone under the device phone number you need to reactivate.
    Note: Device type (Android, iPhone, etc.) will update after you reactivate your new smartphone.  

  8. Select Get started on the "Let's set up your phone" screen

  9. Select Send me a passcode to confirm ownership of the smartphone

  10. Enter the passcode texted to your device and select Verify

    • If you get an error that says to contact IT, select Back and try again

  11.    Download the Duo Mobile App and select Next

     
  12. The next step will vary depending on what device you started the reactivation process on.

Reactivating Duo - Duo SOS Method - (Students Only)

Reactivate with the same phone number using Duo SOS - Students Only

  1. Download and install the Duo Mobile app from your device app store if you do not already have Duo Mobile installed.
  2. Open a browser and go to a page like my.bucknell.edu or mail.bucknell.edu. You'll be prompted for your username and password.
  3. When Duo tries to authenticate, select Other Options

  4. Select Manage Devices

  5. In a new tab, go to duosos.bucknell.edu

  6. Log in with your Bucknell username, password, date of birth, and BUID. Note: you will need your Bucknell ID to get a code. 
     
     

  7. Copy the code and go back to the Duo Security tab/screen

  8. You will need to verify yourself. Select Bypass code.

  9. Paste the Duo SOS Bypass code in the bypass code field box and select Verify.

    • If you were not approved, you may have taken too long between getting the Duo SOS Bypass code and entering it in the field below. Go back to step 5 and try again more quickly. 

  10. Once verified, you will see a list of devices on your Duo account. Select I have a new phone under the device phone number you need to reactivate.
    Note: Device type (Android, iPhone, etc.) will update after you reactivate your new smartphone.  

  11. Select Get started on the "Let's set up your phone" screen

  12. Select Send me a passcode to confirm ownership of the smartphone

  13. Enter the passcode texted to your device and select Verify

  14. Download the Duo Mobile App and select Next

     
  15. The next step will vary depending on what device you started the reactivation process on.

Reactiving Duo - Code Generator

Reauthenticate with the same phone number using a Code Generator

  1. Download and install the Duo Mobile app from your device app store, if you do not already have Duo Mobile installed.
  2. Open a browser and go to a page like my.bucknell.edu or mail.bucknell.edu. You'll be prompted for your username and password.
  3. When Duo tries to authenticate, select Other Options

  4. Select Manage Devices

  5. You will need to verify yourself. Select Hardware Token

  6. Enter the code from your code generator in the passcode field box. If you use a yubikey, it will auto-generate the passcode when you put your finger on the "Y".

  7. Once you are verified, you will see a list of devices on your Duo account. Select I have a new phone under the device phone number you need to reactivate.
    Note: Device type (Android, iPhone, etc.) will update after you reactivate your new smartphone.  

  8. Select Get started on the "Let's set up your phone" screen

  9. Select Send me a passcode to confirm ownership of the smartphone

  10. Enter the passcode texted to your device and select Verify

    • If you get an error that says to contact IT, select Back and try again

  11.    Download the Duo Mobile App and select Next

     
  12. The next step will vary depending on what device you started the reactivation process on.

Unable to authenticate using any of the methods

No access to one of the authentication methods

  1. If you are not a student and are not located in Lewisburg, please call the Tech Desk. 
     
  2. If you're not local to the Bucknell campus, and you're a student, you can go to https://duosos.bucknell.edu and get a temporary access code. You can then copy that code, and in the screen above, when you're asked to verify that it is you when you're adding a new device, you can click on Enter a Passcode.  Paste in the code that you've copied, then add a new phone number or other devices.
     
  3. If you are local to the Bucknell campus, you can come to the Tech Desk with your photo ID and a staff person can help you add another number, or provide you an alternative source of authentication, like a code generator.

Add your Account to Duo Mobile App

The next step will vary depending on what device you started the reactivation process on.

If you started this process using a computer to do the first 10 steps continue with the steps below

  1. Switch to your smartphone. 
     
  2. On your smartphone,  open your Duo Mobile App (enable camera if asked).
    • If you do not have an account listed click on Add Account (+)

       
  3. Click on Use QR code   

     
  4. Go back to your computer and hold your smartphone up to the screen to scan the QR code.
       
     
  5. When the QR code is successfully scanned you will see an account pop up in Duo Mobile. Save the account.

     
  6. Congratulations! You have successfully reauthenticated Duo.
     

If you started this process using a mobile device to do the first 10 steps continue with the steps below

  1. Select Continue

     
  2. Save the account

     
  3. Congratulations! You have successfully reauthenticated Duo.

 

*Most people can authenticate without IT intervention. Very few will have no authentication method.
