Copyleaks FAQ

Starting with the Fall 2025 semester, Bucknell will be using Copyleaks for plagiarism and generative AI detection, as a replacement for Turnitin.  Below are answers to some general questions about Copyleaks.

What is Copyleaks?

Copyleaks is a platform that detects plagiarism and AI-generated content in text and code. It scans submissions against many databases, providing reports that highlight matching text and sources, and uses AI to identify content likely created by AI models. It also offers code analysis.

Key features include (among others):

  • Plagiarism Detection: Scans text against online databases

  • AI Content Detection: Identifies text generated by AI models

  • Codeleaks: Detects plagiarized and AI-generated code

  • Similarity Reports: Highlights matching text and sources

  • Instructor Scanning Tool: Scan student papers submitted outside fo Moodle or your own papers for conferences or publication

How do I get access to Copyleaks?

Copyleaks is directly integrated into Moodle activities.  Although the most typical use for Copyleaks is in Moodle Assignments - see this related help sheet about enabling Copyleaks for Moodle Assignments (link opens in new window) - you can also use Copyleaks for quizzes and forum posts.  You would enable Copyleaks in the activity settings:

Once you open the settings tab, there will be options to enable Copyleaks and then to edit your scan settings. Note: the Edit scan settings button is very easy to miss, and you must set them before allowing students to submit their work:

Once you’ve enabled Copyleaks and modified your scan settings, you simply need to save your assignment/assessment, and you’re ready for students to submit documents that will be scanned for originality by Copyleaks.

How do I see the originality report?

Copyleaks scores are integrated into the activity where you enabled Copyleaks.  If, for example, you enabled Copyleaks for a Moodle Assignment, you would click on the link for the Assignment in your Moodle course, and then you would click on the typical "View all submissions" button.  You will see a new Copyleaks analysis in the "File submissions" column, underneath the title of the student submission:

Copyleaks Originality Analysis

See this article (link opens in new window) for more detailed instructions on viewing the Copyleaks scan results.

Can I submit individual student essays to Copyleaks, if I didn't enable Copyleaks in advance?

Yes, you can submit a file or files to Copyleaks for plagiarism and AI checking. Copyleaks has a separate "Teacher Scanning Tool" that allows you to submit individual files for originality checking. See these instructions (link opens in new window) to learn more about the Copyleaks Teacher Scanning Tool in Moodle.

Can I use Copyleaks to determine if student forum posts are original?

Yes. Because Copyleaks is integrated into Moodle Activity settings, you can enable Copyleaks plagiarism and AI analysis for Quizzes (link opens in new window) within your Moodle course.

Can I use Copyleaks to determine if a student submission to an essay question on a Moodle Quiz is original?

Yes. As we explained in the Forum answer just above, Copyleaks is integrated into Moodle Activity settings, and that applies to the Moodle Quiz activity as well as the Forum activity.

You can indeed enable Copyleaks plagiarism and AI analysis for quiz essay questions (link opens in new window) within your Moodle course.
