How do I see the results of the Copyleaks plagiarism/AI scan for my Moodle Assignment?

As we explained in this related article - "How do I enable Copyleaks for plagiarism and AI detection in Moodle?" (link opens in new window) - we replaced Turnitin with CopyLeaks as the method to check the originality of student Assignment submissions.  CopyLeaks integrates with the Assignment activity in Moodle (along with quizzes and forum posts, when enabled), so you actually see the results within the Assignment activity as well.

This brief video (link opens in new window) explains how to view the results of the scan.  Below are step-by-step instructions as well:

  1. Log in to Moodle, and navigate to your course by clicking on the appropriate link in the Current Course List block, on the right-hand side of the page:

Course Link in Current Course List
  2.  Navigate to the topic block of your course where you added the Assignment, and click on the link for the Assignment:

    Click on Assignment activity link
  3. Click on the "View all submissions" button, as you would do for any Moodle Assignment:

    View all submissions
  4. Moodle will provide the typical list of student submissions to the Assignment activity.  In the "File submissions" column at the far right, you will see the name of the document submitted by each student, along with an "AI content score" and "Plagiarism score" rendered by CopyLeaks.  To open the report page, click on the middle of the three icons that you see there (the icon that looks like a square with an arrow pointing to the right corner):

    Open CopyLeaks Report
  5. The student file submission will be displayed within the Moodle window, along with a match overview on the right-hand side of the screen.  If you click on the "Matching" button - CopyLeaks Matching Button - CopyLeaks will highlight the text within the student submission that matches other documents within its database.
  6. If you click on the "AI Content" button on the right-hand side - CopyLeaks AI Content Button- CopyLeaks will highlight sections of the student text that it believes may have been generated by Artificial Intelligence.
  7. There is an "Export PDF Report" button at the top-right corner of the page that allows you to save a PDF version of the originality report, containing both areas of analysis:

    Export PDF Report

Please note that the plagiarism match score and AI content scores are estimates. Copyleaks will record a plagiarism match if the text the student used can be found online (in publicly accessible Websites) or in the Copyleaks database. A student can still copy content without quoting it (using unusual sources or articles behind a paywall), and CopyLeaks might not notice the match. Similarly, with AI content scores, Copyleaks is using an algorithm that may not identify all of the AI-generated content. It's still important to use your best judgment when deciding if the language in a student's essay sounds "too good to be true" - in other words, significantly different in style and tone from the rest of the student's submitted work.
