How do I enable Copyleaks for plagiarism and AI detection in Moodle?

Although Turnitin was our plagiarism detection tool in the past, we have replaced Turnitin with a new tool called Copyleaks.  Like Turnitin, Copyleaks also scans for originality and AI use, but it integrates with the Moodle Assignment activity and publishes its match scores within the Assignment submission page.  To add Copyleaks originality testing to a Moodle course:

  1. Log in to Moodle, and navigate to your course by clicking on the appropriate link in the Current Course List block, on the right-hand side of the page:

Course Link in Current Course List
  2. If editing mode is not already on, click on the "Turn editing on" button at the top-right of the page:

    Turn editing on
  3. Scroll down to the topic area where you want to add the Assignment, and click on the “Add an activity or resource” link:

    Add an activity or resource

  4. You will see a grid of the Activities and Resources that you can add to a Moodle course in alphabetical order. Find the "Assignment" tile, and click on that button:

    Add Assignment
  5. You will want to fill out all the typical Assignment fields, as we describe in this related article about how to create an assignment in Moodle (link opens in new window).
  6. You will see a new section near the bottom of the Assignment settings called "Copyleaks settings."  Click on that link to expand that section:

    Copyleaks settings
  7. Make sure to click in the box to "Enable Copyleaks."  You will also need to click on "Edit scan settings" to make sure the scan checks all the areas that you want:

    Enable Copyleaks and modify settings
  8. Moodle will open the Copyleaks Scan Settings page in a new window.  You can listen to a detailed description of the settings in this video.  In general, you want to make sure that "AI Content Detection" and "Plagiarism Detection" are enabled, and in the "Online Sources" area, make sure that "All the web" is selected.  (The slider should be to the far right.)  Most likely, you won't want students to see the AI and Plagiarism Detector results, so you may want to de-select those options:

    Copy Leaks General Settings

    Scan Settings

  9. When you are finished selecting the settings, click on the Save Settingsbutton at the bottom-right corner of your screen.
  10. CopyLeaks will confirm that the settings were updated successfully.  You can close out that separate Copyleaks window.
  11. When you have finished entering all the settings for the Assignment activity itself (in addition to the CopyLeaks settings), click on the Save and return to course button to finalize the Assignment creation.
