How do I enable plagiarism and AI detection for forum posts?

As we explained in a related article - How do I enable Copyleaks for plagiarism and AI detection in Moodle? (page opens in new window) - we replaced Turnitin with a new tool called Copyleaks for originality reports.  One important advantage of Copyleaks is that integrates not only with the Moodle Assignment activity, but also with the Forum and Quiz activities, to check those student submissions for copying and AI use.  In this article, we will discuss how to add Copyleaks to a Moodle Forum:

Enabling Copyleaks within the Forum

  1. Log in to Moodle, and navigate to your course by clicking on the appropriate link in the Current Course List block, on the right-hand side of the page:

Course Link in Current Course List
  2. If editing mode is not already on, click on the "Turn editing on" button at the top-right of the page:

    Turn editing on
  3. Scroll down to the topic area where you want to add the Forum, and click on the “Add an activity or resource” link:

    Add an activity or resource

  4. You will see a grid of the Activities and Resources that you can add to a Moodle course in alphabetical order. Find the "Forum" tile, and click on that button:

    Add Forum
  5. You will want to fill out all the typical Forum fields, including the Forum name and a description that lets the students know what kind of detail you expect from Forum posts (length, frequency, interaction with other student posts, etc.).
  6. Once you have added the name and description, you will need to scroll down to a new section near the bottom of the Forum settings called "Copyleaks settings."  Click on that link to expand that section:

    Copyleaks settings
  7. Make sure to click in the box to "Enable Copyleaks."  You will also need to click on "Edit scan settings" to make sure the scan checks all the areas that you want:

    Enable Copyleaks and modify settings
  8. Moodle will open a new Copyleaks window.   You can see a video with a full description of the settings (link opens in new window) on the Copyleaks Website.  (Please note that the video discusses primarily assignment scan settings, but many of them are the same for a forum post.)  For the Forum activity, the default Copyleaks settings tend to be fine, so you can just click on the Save Settings buttonbutton and then close out the Scan Settings window, once Copyleaks confirms that your settings have been saved.
  9. If you have finished entering Forum settings, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the Save and return to course buttonbutton.

Viewing Scan Results

Once students have submitted posts to the forum, you view the Copyleaks analysis as follows:

  1. Click on the forum link within your Moodle course.
  2. You will be taken to the discussion summary page.  In the Discussion section, click on the link for one of the student posts to the forum.
  3. Below the student's post, you will see a Copyleaks analysis of the originality of the student forum post.  For a more detailed analysis, click on the small icon that looks like a square with an arrow pointing to the top-right corner:

    Open Copyleaks report page
  4. Copyleaks will open a new window that shows the student Forum submission, along with Copyleaks' Plagiarism and AI analysis.  On the right-hand side of the screen, you can click on the Matching Button button, and Copyleaks will highlight passages in the student text that match other sources on the Internet or within Copyleaks' database.  You can also click on the AI Content Button button on the right-hand side of the screen to see the sections of the student submission that were likely generated by Artificial Intelligence.
  5. There is an Export PDF Reportbutton at the top-right corner of the Copyleaks screen.  You can click on that button to generate a PDF file with a detailed analysis of the matching scores and the logic behind those scores.
  6. Since the detailed report was opened in a new browser window, you can close out that window and return to the browser window that contained your Moodle course.
