How do I enable plagiarism and AI detection for long-answer (essay) quiz questions?

As we explained in a related article - How do I enable Copyleaks for plagiarism and AI detection for Forum posts? (page opens in new window) - we replaced Turnitin with a new tool called Copyleaks for originality reports.  Copyleaks integrates directly with Moodle Activities, including both the Forum and Quiz activities.  These instructions explain how to check student submissions to long-answer (essay-type) quiz questions for copying and AI use:

Enabling Copyleaks within the Quiz

  1. Log in to Moodle, and navigate to your course by clicking on the appropriate link in the Current Course List block, on the right-hand side of the page:

Course Link in Current Course List
  2. If editing mode is not already on, click on the "Turn editing on" button at the top-right of the page:

    Turn editing on
  3. Scroll down to the topic area where you want to add the Forum, and click on the “Add an activity or resource” link:

    Add an activity or resource

  4. You will see a grid of the Activities and Resources that you can add to a Moodle course in alphabetical order. Find the "Quiz" tile, and click on that button:

    Add Quiz
  5. You will want to fill out all the typical Quiz Settings fields, including the Quiz name and (optionally) a description, the timing for the quiz, etc.  You can fine a complete description of Moodle quiz settings in this Moodle.org "Quiz settings" page (link opens in new window).
  6. Once you have filled in all the relevant Quiz settings, you will need to scroll down to a new section near the bottom of the Forum settings called "Copyleaks settings."  Click on that link to expand that section:

    Copyleaks settings
  7. Make sure to click in the box to "Enable Copyleaks."  You will also need to click on "Edit scan settings" to make sure the scan checks all the areas that you want:

    Enable Copyleaks and modify settings
  8. Moodle will open a new Copyleaks window.   You can see a video with a full description of the settings (link opens in new window) on the Copyleaks Website.  (Please note that the video discusses primarily assignment scan settings, but many of them are the same for a quiz.)  For the Quiz activity, the default Copyleaks settings tend to be fine, so you can just click on the Save Settings buttonbutton and then close out the Scan Settings window, once Copyleaks confirms that your settings have been saved.
  9. If you have finished entering Quiz settings, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the Save and display buttonbutton.
  10. You will need to build your quiz by clicking on the Add question button for Quizbutton.
  11. These "Building Quiz" instructions on Moodle.org (link opens in new window) explain in more details the various ways to add questions to a Moodle quiz.  For Copyleaks AI and plagiarism detection, you will be adding one or more "Essay" questions to your quiz/exam.

Viewing Scan Results

Once students have actually taken your quiz, you view the Copyleaks analysis as follows:

  1. Click on the Quiz link within your Moodle course.
  2. At the top of the page, in the middle, click on the results link:

    Quiz Results

  3. Scroll down on the page until you see a table summarizing information about all the student attempts on the quiz.  Click on the "Review attempt" link for the first student whose results you want to view:

    Review quiz attempt

  4. Beneath the text of each essay response on the quiz, you will see a Copyleaks analysis of the originality of the student submission.  For a more detailed analysis, click on the small icon that looks like a square with an arrow pointing to the top-right corner:

    Open Copyleaks report page
Please note that if your essay question allowed for a file attachment (in addition to a text box), you will see an originality analysis for the file attachment as well:

    File attachment analysis

  5. After you click on that "Open report page" icon, Copyleaks will open a new window that shows the student essay question submission, along with Copyleaks' Plagiarism and AI analysis.  On the right-hand side of the screen, you can click on the Matching Button button, and Copyleaks will highlight passages in the student text that match other sources on the Internet or within Copyleaks' database.  You can also click on the AI Content Button button on the right-hand side of the screen to see the sections of the student submission that were likely generated by Artificial Intelligence.
  6. There is an Export PDF Reportbutton at the top-right corner of the Copyleaks screen.  You can click on that button to generate a PDF file with a detailed analysis of the matching scores and the logic behind those scores.
  7. Since the detailed report was opened in a new browser window, you can close out that window and return to the browser window that contained your Moodle course.
