Bucknell L&IT supports WordPress to create websites. When a site created using the Bucknell WordPress is inactive or isn't being used anymore, we will archive the site. In this article, you will find our policies for retaining Bucknell WordPress sites.
An archived site is no longer editable or viewable on the internet, but can be recovered by L&IT. Visiting the site will result in an error page that says, "This site has been archived due to inactivity. If you are the owner of this site and would like it reactivated, please contact Tech Support."
A deleted site is completely removed and cannot be reactivated by L&IT. Visiting the site will result in an error page that says, "This site is no longer available."
If you continue to use and make updates to your site, it will not be subject to archiving or deleting. Log in to Bucknell WordPress at blogs.bucknell.edu to see your sites and make edits.
Blogs
For sites that end in blogs.bucknell.edu:
Any blogs site that has not been updated or edited in the last four years will be archived. The site administrator(s) will be notified through their Bucknell email that their site has been archived, along with contact information to request that the site be reactivated.
After a site has been in archive for 1 year, the administrator(s) will be emailed with a 30 days notice that their site will be deleted unless they request to reactivate their site.
Courses
For sites that end in courses.bucknell.edu:
Course site retention is managed using the same structure as Moodle courses. After 4 years, course sites will be archived. 4 years after that, they will be deleted.
Scholar
For sites ending in scholar.bucknell.edu:
Any scholar site that has not been updated or edited in the last four years will be archived. The site administrator(s) will be notified through their Bucknell email that their site has been archived, along with contact information to request that the site be reactivated.
After a site has been in archive for 2 years, the administrator(s) will be emailed with a 30 days notice that their site will be deleted unless they request to reactivate their site.
Sites owned by an individual who has left the University will be archived 6-12 months after the individual's departure. After 2 years, they will be deleted.
How do I know if my site is being deleted?
The site administrator(s) will receive automated email notifications when the site has not been edited in four years and first enters archive. If you would like to keep the site, you can respond to the email and ask that it stay active.
The site administrator(s) will also receive an email notification 30 days before your site will be deleted. Once a site is deleted, it cannot be recovered! If you would like to reactivate a site that is about to be deleted, respond to the email notification as soon as possible with your request.
If you want to check if your site is active, you can go to the URL of the site in question:
- Active = The site appears as usual. Even if it requires a login, if the site appears, it is active.
- Archived = You see the error message, "This site has been archived due to inactivity."
- Deleted = you see the error message, "This site is no longer available."
If you would like to recover a site in archive, submit a Tech Ticket.
