Overview
Generative AI refers to deep-learning models capable of creating high-quality text, images, and other content - often with a simple prompt. Beyond basic text and pictures, this technology can generate code, audio, data visualizations, and structured summaries, making it widely applicable.
Available Services
For the most secure experience, the university provides access to core Google Workspace AI tools. These include:
- Gemini: A multimodal assistant for brainstorming, researching, and writing.
- NotebookLM: A research assistant that answers questions based specifically on the documents you provide.
- Workspace Integrations: AI features are built directly into Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, Chat, and others to help automate and enhance everyday tasks.
How to Access
These tools are available through your Bucknell Google Workspace account. Because they are covered under our core services agreement with Google, they provide a more secure environment than public/free AI tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can we turn off AI for users at Bucknell? No. Within our Google Workspace environment, AI features are managed at a platform level; they are typically either available for the entire campus community or disabled for everyone.
Why do I keep seeing new AI features added to Google Workspace? Google Workspace updates similarly to how a phone app receives updates. These features are added automatically as Google evolves its platform, and the University typically does not have granular control over which specific features or buttons appear in your apps.
What privacy and security guarantees do I have with Google Gemini and NotebookLM when using my Workspace account? When using your Bucknell account, your data is protected under our core services agreement. Key protections include:
- Data Ownership: Your data remains yours and is not owned by Google.
- No Public Training: Your prompts and data are not used to train public AI models.
- Confidentiality: Google does not sell your data or use it for advertising.
- Compliance: These tools meet rigorous security standards.
What type of data am I allowed to use with AI?
- Public Data: Can be used freely in approved tools like Gemini and NotebookLM.
- Sensitive or Confidential Data (Level 2 or 3): Must be vetted by IT Security and appropriate stakeholders before being used with any AI tool.
Who is responsible for the content AI generates? You are. AI is a "co-pilot" and can sometimes produce "hallucinations" (inaccurate information) or biased content. You must review all AI-generated output for accuracy before using it.
