Name Change FAQ

Library & IT creates accounts using information from a variety of systems. If that information is incorrect or your information has changed, please contact the department responsible for that data. Errors or changes need to be corrected at the source, not in account management.

Note: Account Management supplies the same legal and preferred name to all university systems. If your name is incorrect in Bmail, myBucknell, Moodle, or Workday, follow the instructions below to change your name in the appropriate system. Changing your name in any single application will not address the problem system-wide.

Current Students

If you are a current student and you need to change your legal or preferred name, you can change your name, gender identity, and pronouns in BannerWeb. If you need assistance, contact the Registrar's Office at 570-577-1201 or Email the Registrar.

Incoming Students

If you are an incoming student and you need to change your legal or preferred name prior to August 1, please Email Admissions. If you need to change your legal or preferred name after August 1, see the instructions for Current Students above.

Current Employees

If you are faculty or staff and you need to change your legal or preferred name, you can change this yourself in Workday or contact Human Resources if you need assistance. Search for "Change my legal name" or "Change my preferred name" in Workday to find the correct form.

Incoming Employees

If you are a newly hired faculty or staff member, you will be able to change your legal name and create a preferred name as soon as you complete your onboarding. Your onboarding paperwork will be assigned to you in Workday. On your first day of employment, you'll be able to complete this paperwork and then change your legal name and create a preferred name in Workday.

Alumni

If you are an alum, complete the Contact Information form or reach out to Alumni Relations at 570-577-3223 or alumniandfamilies@bucknell.edu for assistance.

Account Changes

After you complete the name change process with the appropriate department, the display name on your accounts will update within 24 hours.

Exceptions

  • Friendly Email Alias - Your friendly email alias will not change automatically. Please submit a ticket or contact the Tech Desk to ask that your friendly email alias be changed to match either your new legal name or your new preferred name.
  • Alumni Friendly Email Alias - Your alumni friendly email alias will not change automatically. Please submit a ticket or contact the Tech Desk to ask that your alumni friendly email alias be changed to match either your new legal name or your new preferred name.

Things that Will NOT Change

If other people previously saved your contact information in their contacts, that information will not change when you change your legal name, preferred name, or email alias. You will need to alert people who are likely to have saved contact information if your contact changes. Your co-workers, friends, students, and acquaintances will need to manually edit their contact for you to reflect your new information.
