Why does the Finder window keep popping up on my Mac?

Does this sound familiar?

my new macbook pro loses "focus" in apps and reverts to the finder every minute or so. Basically, I can be typing an email (or working in Premiere or Google Docs or whatever) and the mac switches from the app to the Finder unprovoked.

If so, you might be running into a known bug with our Privileges deployment. If that's what's causing the issue, you've left Privileges in an unlocked state, and so every 10 minutes it's trying to warn you about that fact, but it doesn't have proper security permissions to actually display the message. Fortunately, we've got something you can try.

  1. Go into System Prefs -> Security & Privacy and then the Privacy tab.
  2. Look for Automation in the left side list, and see if "terminal" or "sh" is listed in the right side window.
  3. If it's unchecked, check it - you'll need to be an admin and have clicked the lock in the lower left of the Security & Privacy window to change this.
  4. Once it's checked, leave Privileges running and see if it starts showing you the "Still need to be an admin?" dialog box.

If taking this step doesn't resolve the issue, or if you don't see 'terminal' or 'sh' listed, please contact Tech Support, either by phone at 570.577.7777, email at techdesk@, or our ticket submission form at techticket.bucknell.edu.
