How do I install Canon departmental printers on a Bucknell-owned Mac?

Due to security concerns, we've had to change how printing to departmental Canon printers from Apple computers works on our campus.  You'll need to do two things to restore printing functionality.  The first is to make sure you have the most up-to-date version of one of Apple's most recent operating systems: macOS 13 Ventura, macOS 12 Monterey, macOS 11 Big Sur, or macOS 10.15 Catalina.  The second is to install or reinstall the printers.  
 

Bucknell-owned Machines

Due to security policies, Bucknell-owned machines will need to have administrative rights prior to following the instructions below.

Find Privileges in programs and select Request Privileges and enter your computer password.

Making sure your version of macOS is up to date:

1. Start by clicking the Apple menu in the upper-left hand corner of your screen and select About This Mac

2. Select the current MacOS for the instructions. 

Monterey

1. Click the Software Update Button

2. If you are up to date, you will see a message that your Mac is up to date, and you can proceed to the Reinstalling the Printers section.  Otherwise, you will then click the Update Now button.  This will download and install the latest version of Monterey and install it.  This process may take 15-30 minutes.

3. When Monterey has been installed, go back to Software Update and click on More info.  Install any remaining security updates. Repeat this step until your software is up to date. 



4. Proceed to Reinstalling the Printers section
 

Big Sur or Catalina

1. Click on Software Update

2. If all you see is the option to Upgrade to macOS Monterey, you're on the latest version of your current OS, but if it says "Other updates available" you need to update. You can do one of two things; 1. Upgrade to Monterey, or 2. Update Current OS. Installing Monterey gives you better compatibility with future software, but takes 30-60 minutes. Installing updates for your current OS will likely be quicker, probably 15-30 minutes. 
 

Upgrade to Monterey

1. Select Upgrade Now and you will be walked through the process of upgrading​​​​​​.
 
NOTE: In some circumstances, it's possible for you to get a pop-up message telling you to contact the Tech Desk; in that case, L&IT has found an issue that may prevent a successful installation of Monterey, and you should contact us as the message directs.

3. When Monterey has been installed, go back to Software Update and click on More info.  Install any remaining security updates. Repeat this step until your software is up to date. 




 

4. Proceed to Reinstalling the Printers section

 

Upgrade Current OS

1. Click the blue "More Info" underneath "Other updates are available.  
 
2. Make sure everything is checked, and click Install Now.  When it's complete, proceed to Reinstall the Printers below. 

3. When the OS security update has been installed, go back to Software Update and click on More info again.  Install any remaining security updates. Repeat this step until your software is up to date.

Older versions of MacOS

If you have a version of macOS that is older, such as macOS 10.14 Mojave or macOS 10.13 High Sierra, we recommend you contact the Tech Desk at x7-7777 to discuss your options.  
 
 

Reinstalling or installing the Printers:

1. Once your OS is up to date, go into your Applications folder (via the Finder->Go menu or holding Command-Shift-A) and find the Self Service App. 
 
2. You will be prompted to log in with your Bucknell username and password.

3. Once you are logged in, click on Departmental Printers on the left-hand side, and a list of various campus buildings will appear. 
 
4. Find the building(s) you work in, and click the Install button.

5. The first time you print you will have to enter your Bucknell username and password. To prevent this box from popping up every time you print you will want to check the Remember this password in my keychain box. 
 
NOTE: If you do not get this box and it says "hold for authentication", please follow the instructions under Additional Information.
