How do I access Bucknell University Remote Lab (VMware Horizon) from a Linux computer?

Inactivity Timeout: A user's session will be automatically disconnected after 10 hours (600 minutes) if it has been inactive for that long. Any unsaved work will be lost.

Saving Work: All users should always save work to their Netspace (U: Drive) during their session. Folders, such as Desktop or My Documents, are virtual and NOT your personal computer and files saved to those locations will be deleted the session is disconnected. 

Accessing BU Remote Lab from a Linux Computer

You can access Bucknell University Remote Lab (VMware Horizon) either through your browser or a client program installed on your local computer. The primary difference is that the installed program allows you to access your local files on your Linux system whereas the browser solution does not. However, the browser solution is a bit easier to begin using if you don't have a need for the local file access.

Browser Only

  1. Go to
  2. Select VMware Horizon HTML Access
  3. Login using your normal Bucknell credentials
  4. Select the desktop session you'd like to launch.

Local Client Program

  1. If the client program is already installed on your computer, go to step 6. Otherwise, you'll need to first install the program so go to, and select Install VMware Horizon Client.
  2. On the web page that you're taken to, under VMware Horizon Client for 64-bit Linux, select Go to Downloads.
  3. On the next page, select Download.
  4. Once the download has finished, open a Terminal and change into the directory where the file was downloaded.
  5. From the command line, run chmod u+x VMware-Horizon-Client-4.9.0-9507999.x64.bundle and sudo ./VMware-Horizon-Client-4.9.0-9507999.x64.bundle (substitute the name/version of the actual downloaded file). Run through the graphical installer until it completes.
  6. After it's installed you can launch the client via the Linux graphical menu under Applications -> Internet -> VMware Horizon Client.
  7. In the VMware Horizon Client, select New Server.
  8. In the text field, enter and select Connect.
  9. Then, enter your Bucknell username (e.g., xyz012) and password and select Login.
  10. Once you have been authenticated, if you would like to be able to access your local Linux files from the Windows desktop/applications that you'll be launch:
    1. Go to Connections -> Settings.
    2. Select Sharing.
    3. Select Add.
    4. Locate the folder you'd like to be able to access (e.g. your home directory folder) and select Open.
    5. Select Close.
  11. Now double-click on the desktop session you'd like to launch. If the session launches in full screen mode and that is not desirable, go to the View menu at the top and select Windowed (note that this can also be configured in the Connections -> Settings area mentioned in step 10.1).
