How do I access Bucknell University Remote Lab (VMware Horizon) from a Linux computer?

Inactivity Timeout: A user's session will be automatically disconnected after 10 hours (600 minutes) if it has been inactive for that long. Any unsaved work will be lost.

Saving Work: All users should always save work to their Netspace (U: Drive) during their session. Folders, such as Desktop or My Documents, are virtual and NOT your personal computer and files saved to those locations will be deleted the session is disconnected. 

Accessing BU Remote Lab from a Linux Computer

You can access Bucknell University Remote Lab (VMware Horizon) either through your browser or a client program installed on your local computer. The local client program may provide somewhat better performance for some applications.

Browser Only

  1. Go to https://bucknell.edu/remotelab and follow the instructions to Enter the Remote Lab
  2. Login to Bucknell's single sign-on (if necessary) using your normal Bucknell credentials
  3. In the upper right corner, select your name and then Settings.
  4. Then select Preferences.
  5. Be sure the Browser option is selected. If not, select it and hit Save. This setting should now be saved for future sessions.
  6. Select the desktop session or application you'd like to launch.

Local Client Program

  1. If the client program is already installed on your computer, go to step 5. Otherwise, you'll need to first install the program so go to the VMware Horizon client download page.
  2. On the web page that you're taken to, under select the Download button.
  3. Once the download has finished, open a Terminal and change into the directory where the file was downloaded.
  4. From the command line, run chmod u+x VMware-Horizon-Client-5.1.0-13956721.x64.bundle and sudo ./VMware-Horizon-Client-5.1.0-13956721.x64.bundle. Run through the graphical installer until it completes.
  5. After it's installed, go to https://bucknell.edu/remotelab and follow the instructions on the page.
