Microsoft is ending support for Microsoft Office 2021 for Windows. All Bucknell-owned Windows computers with this version of Office must upgrade to Microsoft Office 2024 using the automated installer in Portal Manager.
Check your version of Office for Windows
- Click on the start menu or search box.
- Type Programs.
- Open Add or Remove Programs to view your Installed apps.
- Scroll to Microsoft Office LTSC Professional.
- If the version is 2021 or earlier, you must upgrade to 2024.
- If the version is 2024, congratulations! You do not need to do anything.
- Close this window.
Upgrade to 2024
- Close all Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project, Visio, and Publisher.
- Click on the start menu or search box.
- Type Portal Manager.
- Scroll to SelfService - Upgrade Office.
- Double click the installer. First the installer will uninstall the version of Office currently installed on your computer and then it will install Office 2024.
- When the installer completes, use Microsoft Office 2024.
How do I know the progress of the upgrade?
There is a status bar in the corner of Portal Manager that will display the download and installation progress. Please be patient while the upgrade is in progress. Do not disconnect from power or close your laptop during the upgrade.
What if I do not upgrade?
Microsoft no longer offers support for Office 2021 and all older versions, which means there are no patches or fixes. This software presents a significant security risk and must be upgraded. Version 2021 and older will cease to function.
How long with it take to upgrade?
If you are on campus connected to bucknell.edu wifi, it will take 5-10 minutes.
If you are off campus connected to the VPN and fast wifi, it may take 3-4 hours. For best results, upgrade while you and your computer are on campus.
Can I continue to use Microsoft Office during the upgrade?
You cannot. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint must be closed during the upgrade.
Can I still use Microsoft Publisher?
You cannot. Microsoft has ended support and discontinued development for Publisher. At the completion of this upgrade, Microsoft Publisher will no longer be available.
Can I still use Microsoft Visio and Project?
You can. Microsoft continues to support and develop these applications. At the completion of this upgrade, you can login to to Portal Manager and install Visio 2024 or Project 2024.
