Body
Due to increasing cyber threats and on the advice of our security consultants, Library & IT rolling out a system to make sure our Macs stay up-to-date. Historically, Library & IT pushed software updates out to our Windows users, but haven’t done the same for our Mac users, for technical and cultural reasons.
How often will I see this update pop-up?
On a monthly basis, a pop-up window from Library & IT will appear asking you to update your computer. You’ll be able to defer updates for up to 7 days, after which the computer will attempt to force an update. This way, you’ll be able to run the update - which might take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour - at a time that’s convenient for you. It’s also possible that there’s no update needed at all. In either case, the process will notify you when it’s finished.
Are updates the same as OS upgrades?
In contrast with upgrades, updates are more frequently released software patches that help secure or enhance the current operating system and are designed to protect your device against security or privacy vulnerabilities. Updates use a second and sometimes a third number to denote increments. For example, iOS 15.1 is an update to iOS 15.
How do I know if this pop-up is safe?
Messages will be clear that they are from Library & IT.
