How do I add a streaming (Library-owned) video to a Moodle course site?

Summary

Instructions for adding a streaming video to a Moodle course.

Body

We have digitized much of our Library collection of videos, to allow for easy course-related viewing of movies and other video files.

If the title can not be found in the Shared Repository, you can request that the video be added to the repository using this link:

The instructional video just below will walk you through the process of adding a streaming video to your course site. If you added the video in previous courses, you may have an old link that doesn't work, so you'll want to re-add the video to your current site following these new instructions (link opens in new window):

https://mediaspace.bucknell.edu/media/Moodle+KVR6/1_xw4429fn

Please note that we no longer have multiple player sizes, so when you actually select your video to embed, you'll need to click on an "Embed" button to add the video to your Moodle course.

Here are step-by-step instructions as well:

  1. Go to Moodle at https://moodle.bucknell.edu, and click on the link for your course in the "Current Course List" module on the right-hand side of the screen.

  2. If the Edit Mode is currently off, click on the "Turn editing on" button at the top-right corner of your window to allow you to make changes to the course content:

  3. Once you decide which topic area in your course will contain the video, move your mouse to the bottom of that topic block, and click on the “Add an activity or resource” link:

  4. Among the list of possible Resources (arranged in alphabetical order), scroll down until you find the link for Kaltura Video Resource, click on that link to select it, and then click on the Add button (or double-click on the Kaltura Video Resource link):

    Add Kaltura Video Resource

  5. Type in the name of the video (in the Name field), and click on the "Add Media" button:

  6. Moodle will open a pop-up window and connect to our Kaltura video library. (It could take a bit of time for that window to load, since we have such an extensive video collection.) The collection that appears by default is your "My Media" collection, which contains all the videos that you have personally recorded and uploaded to Mediaspace.  To add a Library-owned video (that is part of our streaming media collection), click on the "Shared Repository" tab at the top of the page:

  7. Type the name of your video into the small search box near the top of the page, and hit the Enter key on your keyboard to search for that video:

  8. When Kaltura finds your video, click on the Embed button on the right-hand side to select that video:

  9. Moodle will close that pop-up window, and an image of the video (along with player controls) will appear in the Video section of your “Adding a new Kaltura Video Resource” dialog box. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the "Save and return to course" button to save your changes.

  10. The video will now appear as a link in the topic area where you added it, and students can click on the link to watch the video:
